Have you ever broken a rib? I did such a thing almost three weeks ago and you just don’t realize how many things you do on a regular basis that really hurt when you have a broken rib. First of all, how did it happen you ask?
Well, on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, May 11 to be exact, I was outside playing football with the kids for hours. At one point, I was running after a kick-off when one of the kids fell in front of me. Rather than crush them into the ground by falling on them, I jumped over them and put my hand out to break my fall only to have my own elbow go into my ribs. It was then that I felt the crack. It felt like getting the wind knocked out of you but after a few seconds, I got right back to playing football, albeit a lot slower.
It got worse as the day went on, which I’m sure wasn’t made any better by carrying a sofa up the stairs that evening.
In any event, I thought it would just go away but after a few days, the pain was still there and actually getting worse. I went to get an x-ray on Dr. Checo’s advice, just to be sure no vital organs were being punctured. Fortunately nothing else internal was affected and I was told I would just have to ride it out for 3-4 weeks as there was nothing that could be done.
Simple pleasures in life like taking a deep breath or even sneezing would bring on a momentary fear as the force of the sneeze would cause pain. Or a cough. Or getting out of bed. Or getting in and out of a car. You just don’t realize that almost everything you do seems to involve your rib cage in some way.
Anyway, I threw a football a few days ago with minimal pain and shot a basketball without any pain. I’m looking forward to getting back to working out and engaging in outdoor activities with the kids.
I got away from this with the past few blogs, but thought I would get back to including some of the many great comments we receive about the weekly Frisco Community newsletter.:
